How to Play Roulette
Roulette is the easiest game in the casino to understand and the easiest to misread. The layout looks like it offers dozens of different bets with different value. It does not — nearly all of them cost exactly the same.
One detail decides everything: how many zeroes are on the wheel.
Inside bets and outside bets
Inside bets sit on the numbers. A single number pays 35 to 1, two numbers pay 17 to 1, four pay 8 to 1, and so on down.
Outside bets sit around the edge — red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18, 19 to 36 — and pay 1 to 1. Columns and dozens pay 2 to 1.
Here is the part that surprises people: on a single-zero wheel, every one of those bets carries the same 2.70% house edge. Spreading chips across the layout changes how your evening feels, not what it costs.
The zero is the whole game
A European wheel has 37 pockets: 1 to 36 plus a single zero. A single number pays 35 to 1 when the true odds are 36 to 1. The zero is the gap, and it works out to 2.70%.
An American wheel adds a second zero. Now there are 38 pockets and the payout is still 35 to 1. The edge almost doubles to 5.26%.
Same game, same layout, same-looking table. Nearly twice the cost. Before you play, count the zeroes.
Red and black are not safe bets
Red and black feel like a coin flip, and almost are — except the zero is neither red nor black. When it lands, both lose.
Eighteen red, eighteen black, one green. That single green pocket is why an even-money bet wins less than half the time.
Some tables offer La Partage or En Prison, which return half your even-money stake when zero hits. That halves the edge on those bets to 1.35%. If a table offers it, it is the best roulette on the site.
Why betting systems fail
The Martingale tells you to double after every loss so that one win recovers everything. It works beautifully until the run of losses is long enough, and then it takes your whole bankroll in one hand.
Start at RM 10 and seven losses in a row means the next bet is RM 1,280 to win RM 10 back. Seven in a row is not rare. It happens roughly once in every hundred and fifty attempts.
No sequence of bet sizes changes the house edge, because every spin is priced independently. Systems rearrange when you lose. They do not change whether you do.
Playing it sensibly
Pick the wheel with one zero. Choose a stake you can repeat for the length of session you planned. Ignore the display board showing the last twenty results.
If you want the longest session for your money, the even-money bets outside will keep you at the table longest. If you want the occasional large payout, single numbers will do that. Both cost 2.70%.
